On Saturday Popcaan will host Unruly Fest at Lyssons Park in St Thomas. The concert is expected to feature performances by the dancehall deejay and several of his friends from the entertainment fraternity.
Unruly Fest comes two weeks after he performed to a packed venue at SSE Arena, popularly called Wembley Arena.
He was still elated when the Jamaica Observer caught up with him.
“Well, I’m honestly grateful for the love and dedication that the fans have shown. This was Popcaan in concert and them showing up, so we were able to say “sold out” and actually apologise to those who could not get in, (which] signifies to me that my body of work speaks for itself and speaks more loudly than any other form of communication. They know the hits and the songs from the album. We trying to do music the ‘street’ way and the real way and we give thanks for the blessings,” Popcaan told the Observer.
He was backed by his Unruly Band.
Wembley Arena is the second-largest indoor arena in London and the eighth largest in the United Kingdom.
Several top international acts have played at the 12,500-seater venue, including Beyoncé, Tina Turner, Spice Girls, Prince, Bob Dylan, and Britney Spears. The 2017 MTV European Awards and the just-concluded grand final of the 2018 UK X Factorare among the major events, which have been held at the venue.
Popcaanvspoke about the highlight of the performance.
“Basically, the entire thing still. Hearing the fans chanting word for word, the realisation hit you that you know this is not a festival with three of four acts; this is you and your fans on this musical journey,” he said.
Popcaan has had some success in the United Kingdom over the last five years. He has charted on the United Kingdom Official Top 100 chart with songs including Kisses For Breakfast (with Melissa Steel, number ten in 2014); I’m in Control (with AlunaGeorge, number 39 in 2016); Should’ve Been Me (with Naughty Boy and Kyla, number 61 in 2016); Saturnz Barz (with Gorillaz, number 87 in 2017).
He won the UK MOBO Award (Music of Black Origin) for Best Reggae Act twice — 2015 and 2016.
This year has been a good one for Popcaan. Locally, he scored hits with Silence, My Type, Wine for Me, Inviolable, and the chart-topper Family.
For 2019, Popcaan has a lot in store of fans.
“Look out for new music from the artistes on my label; of course, another mix tape and new music from the Unruly Boss,” he said.
